Hospital Beds Coverage Guidelines

Hospital Beds are Covered When Prescribed by a Physician and If the Patient Meets ANY of the Following Criteria:

1. Patient Requires Positioning of the Body in Ways Not Feasible with an Ordinary Bed

2. Patient Requires Positioning of the Body in Ways Not Feasible with an Ordinary Bed to Alleviate Pain

3. Patient requires the Head of the Bed to be elevated more than 30 degrees most of the time due to COPD, CHF, or Aspiration

4. Patient Requires Traction That Can Only Be Applied to a Hospital Type Bed

5. Patient Requires a Bed Height Different than a Fixed Height Hospital Bed to Permit Transfers to the Chair, Wheelchair, or Standing Position

6. Patient Requires Frequent Changes in Body Positions And/or Has an Immediate Need for a Change in Body Position

★Medical Equipment can only be delivered 1-2 days prior to D/C from a hospital or facility if needed for training before discharge


★Compression Stockings & TEDS not covered


★Cushions are not covered if they do not have a wheelchair


★Cushions are not covered for a transport chair, Lift chair or scooter

★ Most Items NOW Require a Written Physician’s Order In Hand Prior to Delivery (Walkers, Canes, Mattresses, Wheelchairs & Cushions, Scooters & PowerChairs, Oxygen, Nebulizers, C-Paps)


★ Patient must see ordering physician within 30 days of ordering equipment for a face to face visit that documents medical necessity of equipment ordered


★ There MUST be documentation to justify the Medical Need of the equipment either in the physicians progress notes, facility or home health notes.

★ Must have documentation of Medical Necessity and why equipment is Reasonable & Necessary.


★ Medicare will not cover/pay for another item that is the same or similar if they received it within 5 years.
